NOTE: This site is temporary and was created very quickly. It's meant only to share the info/videos below. No fair ripping
on me for my lack of html skills!
I've uploaded some videos of my 2001.5 Audi S4 for your viewing pleasure (see links below for the "siren" and
"dentist drill" noises....with a blown turbo noise to follow [my storage limit is only 20MB so I will have to delete
the first two in order to post the third]).
I apologize for the poor quality. I meant to create some great videos but I first tried my little Cannon Digital Elph
camera to see how the sound came out. Within days my turbos blew so I had no way of going back to make any recordings of the
siren and dentist drill noises with a high quality camera/mount. Sorry.
The siren noise was taken after a typical cold startup in the morning on the way to work. I travel over some steep hills
on my way to work and I thought this would be a good way to enhance the load on the engine for the siren noise. Notice that
I don't ever get into boost (see A-pillar boost gauge in the video). The max siren noise is around -8in Hg vacuum and I tried
to hover (when possible) around that point using the throttle. Listen for a faint siren noise over the wind blowing through
the open windows. The noise basically disappears after the car is warmed up (oil temps above 150 degrees).
The dentist drill noise was taken after my car was fully warmed up and I was exiting a highway where there were cement
walls on either side of the road. I chose this area so that the sound from the engine could reflect back into the car through
the open windows. I am running an AMS chip and I went full throttle at just below 3krpm in order to build max boost (about
1.1bar). This is where the dentist drill noise is most noticeable because, while the turbos aren't spinning their fastest
yet due to the relatively low rpm, the engine/exhaust noises are lower and so it's (hopefully) clearer to hear. Again, I apologize
for the low quality.
Soon, I will post the sound of my blown K03 turbo. I think it's best that you hear these relatively quiet sounds first
so that you can get an idea of how loud the blown turbo is.
Stats on my car:
2001.5 Audi S4, 6spd
Purchased used at 9k miles...supposedly stock since birth.
Stage 2 at about 10k miles (GIAC-x, Milltek 3" cat-back).
Siren noise at startup around 15k miles.
Dentist drill noise around 28k miles.
Switched to AMS chip around 32k miles.
Siren noise takes longer to disappear after warmup (~40k miles) and can hear turbos spool DOWN.
Turbo (passenger side?) blows at 44k miles.
Mobil 1 0W30 or 0W40 always used, changed every 5k miles.
Proper warm up and cool down procedures usually obeyed ;)
Enjoy!
